Cold Wax and Oil Painting Intensive Course

Create Dynamic Painting with Cold Wax & Oil

During this upbeat, exciting, and informative workshop you’ll create multiple paintings using cold wax and oil paints. Be prepared to learn about the do’s and don’ts of creating with this medium, expand your artistic voice and enjoy a fun, spontaneous and intuitive way of painting.

Through demos and one-on-one instruction, you’ll learn:

  • All about the materials and tools used in cold wax paintings

  • How to mix cold wax and oil paint

  • How to create exciting colors that are harmonious

  • Numerous styles to explore with this fun medium

  • How to apply cold wax and oil

  • Various techniques to create excitement and harmony in your paintings - What techniques you can do when (wet, tacky, dry)

  • The differences of painting on oil paper vs. wood panels

  • How to critique your paintings as you go along

  • How looking at value can lead you

  • How to finish, sign and frame cold wax paintings

All supplies will be provided. If you want, bring any favorite oil paints you might like to use and an old shirt or apron you can get dirty.

Advanced Cold Wax Course

Prerequisite: Students must be familiar with painting with cold wax medium.

During this intensive, informative, and upbeat workshop you’ll dive  deep into exploring your artistic voice and creating cold wax and  oil paintings that reflect YOU! I’ll do several demos throughout  the workshop, and you’ll receive lots of personal instruction to  help you work through your paintings, get “out of your head” and  move forward in new and exciting ways. All in an encouraging,  nurturing, and fun environment! 

Additionally, we’ll dive into the elements and principles of design,  I’ll show examples, and then we’ll focus on how to use them in  your work. 

We’ll explore multiple techniques including: 

  • Creating an exciting underpainting with acrylic paints - Layering 

  • Making multiple textures 

  • Mark making 

  • Mixing colors that create harmony 

  • Stenciling and transfers 

  • Drawing into and on top of cold wax 

  • Using Pan Pastels with cold wax 

  • Glazing with cold wax 

  • Masking 

  • Creating patterns 

  • Working in a series 

  • Editing for clarity 

  • Adding the final “jewelry”

On the last day of the workshop you’ll get a list of questions to ask  yourself to determine if your paintings are finished! You’ll walk  away feeling confident about creating strong cold wax paintings  that are YOU!

Dianna Fritzler

Over the past 16 years, Dianna has taught multitudes of students across the country through her enlightening and uplifting workshops. She believes that we are our own worst critics and that by exploring our creative gifts without judgement in an affirming and nurturing environment we can unlock magic. From beginners to advanced, her students discover new potential and create powerful works of art.

As a full-time artist, Dianna is known for her vibrant paintings. She is on the faculty of the Art Students League of Denver and her paintings reside in the collections of Children’s Hospital Colorado, St. Mary’s Hospital, Colorado Mesa University and Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Colorado. She is represented by several galleries and her artwork dons the wine labels of Grande River Vineyards. Her biggest honor is to be able to spread joy through her work and teach others how to find delight in painting.
